    The effect of physically or non-physically forced sexual assault on trajectories of sport participation from adolescence through young adulthood

    Background Sexual assault is one of potential factors that may greatly affect an individuals sport participation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of experiencing physically or non-physically forced sexual activity on trajectories of sport participation from adolescence to young adulthood. Methods This study used the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) data. Group-based trajectory modeling was utilized to examine the effect of experiencing sexual assault on trajectories of sport participation from adolescence to young adulthood. Results A three-group trajectory model (high-stable group, high-decreasing group, and low-stable group) best fit sport participation among male participants and a two-group trajectory model (high-decreasing group and low-stable group) best fit sport participation among female participants. Both physically and non-physically forced sexual activity did not have significant effect on trajectories of sport participation among male participants. On the other hand, non-physically forced sexual assault significantly affected sport participation trajectory among female participants. Conclusions Special care is required in developing sport promotion program for women victims of non-physically forced sexual activity. The results of this study also suggest that group-based trajectory modeling is a useful technique to examine distinct trajectories of sport participation from adolescence through young adulthood

    First snapshot on behavioral characteristics and related factors of patients with chronic kidney disease in South Korea during the COVID-19 pandemic (June to October 2020)

    Background The recent novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to unprecedented changes in behavior. We evaluated the current status of precautionary behavior and physical activity in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A population of CKD patients (n = 306) registered in the Study on Kidney Disease and Environmental Chemicals (SKETCH, Clinical Trial No. NCT04679168) cohort recruited from June 2020 to October 2020 was included in the study. We conducted a questionnaire survey related to risk perception of COVID-19, precautionary behavior, and physical activity. Results There were 187 patients (61.1%) with estimated glomerular filtration rate of <45 mL/min/1.73 m2. This population showed a higher degree of risk perception for COVID-19 than the general population. Age was the most significant determinant of risk perception among CKD patients. During the pandemic, social distancing and hygiene-related behavior were significantly increased (p < 0.001). The frequency of exercise was decreased only in those who took regular exercise, without diabetes, or with a lower Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) (p < 0.001), with no change among the other groups. Socioeconomic status and comorbidities significantly affected behavioral characteristics regardless of the category. Education and income were significantly associated with precautionary behaviors such as staying at home and hand sanitizer use. Patients with higher CCI status significantly increased frequency of exercise (adjusted odds ratio, 2.10; 95% confidence interval, 1.01–4.38). Conclusion CKD patients showed higher risk perception with active precautionary behavioral changes than the general population. Healthcare providers should be aware of the characteristics to comprise precautionary behavior without reducing physical activity

    The 13th Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics

    Ngā mihi aroha ki ngā tangata katoa and warm greetings to you all. Welcome to Herenga Delta 2021, the Thirteenth Southern Hemisphere Conference on the Teaching and Learning of Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics. It has been ten years since the Volcanic Delta Conference in Rotorua, and we are excited to have the Delta community return to Aotearoa New Zealand, if not in person, then by virtual means. Although the limits imposed by the pandemic mean that most of this year’s 2021 participants are unable to set foot in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, this has certainly not stopped interest in this event. Participants have been invited to draw on the concept of herenga, in Te Reo Māori usually a mooring place where people from afar come to share their knowledge and experiences. Although many of the participants are still some distance away, the submissions that have been sent in will continue to stimulate discussion on mathematics and statistics undergraduate education in the Delta tradition. The conference invited papers, abstracts and posters, working within the initial themes of Values and Variables. The range of submissions is diverse, and will provide participants with many opportunities to engage, discuss, and network with colleagues across the Delta community. The publications for this thirteenth Delta Conference include publications in the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, iJMEST, (available at https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/tmes20/collections/Herenga-Delta-2021), the Conference Proceedings, and the Programme (which has created some interesting challenges around time-zones), by the Local Organizing Committee. Papers in the iJMEST issue and the Proceedings were peer reviewed by at least two reviewers per paper. Of the ten submissions to the Proceedings, three were accepted. We are pleased to now be at the business end of the conference and hope that this event will carry on the special atmosphere of the many Deltas which have preceded this one. We hope that you will enjoy this conference, the virtual and social experiences that accompany it, and take the opportunity to contribute to further enhancing mathematics and statistics undergraduate education.     Liver-Derived Exosomes Induce Inflammation and Lipogenesis in Mice Fed High-Energy Diets

    The liver is an endocrine organ and is the first organ exposed to nutrients when they are absorbed into the body before being metabolized by the distal organs. Although the liver plays an essential role in the interactions between the metabolic organs, their regulatory mechanisms have not been elucidated. Exosomes mediate communication between cells and primarily enable the transport of lipids, mRNAs, miRNAs, and proteins between cells. In this study, we investigated the effects of lipid metabolism on the liver and adipose tissue between mice fed high-fat (HF) and high-fat/sucrose (HFS) diets and determined the effects of liver tissue-derived exosomes on adipocytes to understand the underlying mechanisms associated with obesity-related metabolic diseases. Normal, HF, and HFS diets were fed to the mice for 12 weeks to compare differences based on dietary patterns. We showed different lipid metabolism effects on the liver and adipose tissue between HF- and HFS-fed mice. In the liver, fibrosis, inflammation, and lipogenesis were activated at higher levels in the HFS than in the HF group, and lipolysis was activated at higher levels in the HF than in the HFS group. In adipose tissue, adipogenesis, fatty acid transport, and lipolysis were activated at higher levels in the HF than in the HFS group, and inflammation and lipogenesis were activated at higher levels in the HFS than in the HF group. This result followed a similar trend reported in 3T3-L1 cells treated with liver-derived exosomes. In addition, the TG content of the liver-derived exosomes was significantly higher, and lipid accumulation was accelerated in the HFS than in the HF group. Based on these results, continuous exposure to HF and HFS diets induces lipid accumulation mediated by liver-derived exosomes; however, there is a difference in lipid metabolism. These results contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms of exosome function in relation to obesity-related metabolic diseases and the metabolic relationship between tissues

    Complete mitochondrial genome of the Korean endemic springtail Homidia koreana Lee & Lee, 1981 (Collembola: Entomobryidae)

    The Korean endemic springtail Homidia koreana Lee & Lee, is popular in the leaf litter of various forests of South Korea, probably widely distributed throughout the Korean Peninsula. The complete mitochondrial genome of H. koreana was sequenced, assembled, and annotated. The mitochondrial genome of H. koreana consists of a circular DNA molecule of 14,846 bp, with 68.4% AT content. It comprises 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer (tRNA) genes, and 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The molecular phylogenetic relationships estimated using MrBayes 3.2 revealed that H. koreana was closely related to Homidia socia Denis, 1929, both of which belong to the genus Homidia
